When Life Feels Ghetto but God Is Still Good
Share
Let’s just get straight to it:
Sometimes life be LIFE-ING.
You’re praying, tithing, showing up, and still feel like you’re stuck in the same struggle. You’re trying to “walk by faith,” but lowkey you’re tripping over the same mess every week. Rent’s due, the car acting funny, your kids are feral, and you just opened your Bible app only to get hit with “Job 1.” Why that book though, Lord?
Been there. Still there sometimes.
I used to think that once I “got right with God,” everything would magically click. Like life would go from chaos to calm and I’d float on holy vibes and almond milk lattes. Instead, I found myself in the ghetto-est season of my life — broke, confused, tired, and begging God for answers.
“Why am I doing all the right things and still struggling?”
And that’s when God whispered back:
“Because I’m not after your performance. I’m after your heart.”
Whew. Read that again.
The Shift Happens in the Struggle
God doesn’t promise a struggle-free life. What He does promise is to be with us in it. That’s what changed everything for me. I stopped trying to perform and started getting real with Him. That’s when I actually started hearing Him.
I used to run from the Bible because it felt too complicated. King James was giving Shakespeare and I was not in the mood. But when I started reading with fresh eyes — looking for people and patterns, not perfection — it hit different.
Turns out, God has always used the messy ones.
The loud ones.
The doubters.
The ones who tried to fix it themselves and failed.
Basically… folks like me. Folks like you.
Ghetto Bible Story Isn’t Just a Book — It’s a Mirror
That’s why I wrote Ghetto Bible Story.
Because some of us need the Word with seasoning.
We need the scripture and the side-eye. The truth and the transparency. We need someone to say, “Hey, this story about Moses? It’s giving anxiety and avoidance — and still, God called him.”
If you’ve ever felt like the Bible wasn’t written for people like you —
I’m here to tell you it absolutely was.
The same God who walked with Peter when he cussed, Thomas when he doubted, and Paul when he was wildin’?
That God still walks with you.
You Don’t Have to Be Perfect to Be Called
Here’s what I know now:
-
God isn’t waiting for you to get it all together.
-
He’s not scared of your questions.
-
He’s not judging you for not understanding Genesis on the first try.
He just wants you to show up — authentically, consistently, and open.
Final Word (And It’s Not Even Sunday)
If life feels ghetto right now, you're not alone.
But even in the mess, there’s meaning.
Even in the chaos, God is creating something beautiful.
Don’t give up on Him.
He sure hasn’t given up on you.
So grab your book, open your heart, and let’s get into these stories — not as perfect people, but as flawed, funny, still-growing souls who know that Jesus is the only reason we’re still standing.
With love, grace, and side-eye,
